Understanding Your Medicare Options

Medicare consists of multiple parts, each designed to cover different aspects of healthcare. We help you explore:

  • Medicare Part A & Part B (Original Medicare) – Covers hospital stays, doctor visits, and essential medical services.
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) – An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, often including extra benefits like vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) – Helps cover out-of-pocket costs such as copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.
  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plans) – Provides coverage for prescription medications to help reduce costs.

FAQ

Medicare is available to U.S. citizens and legal residents who are 65 or older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions like End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

  • Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health services. Most people get it premium-free if they’ve paid Medicare taxes while working.
  • Medicare Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. It requires a monthly premium.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurance companies and provide all benefits of Original Medicare (Parts A & B) plus extra perks like vision, dental, hearing, and prescription drug coverage. These plans often have lower out-of-pocket costs but may require using a network of doctors.

A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan helps cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay. If you have frequent medical expenses and want to reduce surprise bills, a Medigap plan can be a great option.

Medicare Part D provides coverage for prescription medications. You can enroll in a standalone Part D plan or get it included in a Medicare Advantage plan. Plans vary in cost and coverage, so choosing the right one ensures you pay the lowest prices for your prescriptions.

You can enroll in Medicare during these key periods:

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday and ends 3 months after.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): From October 15 – December 7, you can switch or update your Medicare plans.
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEP): If you have a qualifying life event, like losing employer coverage, you may enroll outside the standard periods.

No! If you continue working past 65 and have employer-sponsored health coverage, you may be able to delay Medicare enrollment without penalties. However, it’s important to compare your work benefits with Medicare to determine the best option.
